Aids aids aids

September 29th, 2007 3 comments

Sick of being sick. Well, I’m not anymore really. My sore throat is completely gone, and that’s what was really bothering me. No more foggy head either. But I have a lingering cough that’s slowly getting better. Too slowly for me honestly. It’s starting to give me a headache, like a gunshot in closed quarters every time I cough. I honestly wish what I have was bacterial so I could at least eat some nasty tasting pink pills and make it go away. Stupid virus.

“About 36 percent of Illinois fourth-graders ranked as proficient in math, up from 20 percent in 2000. In eighth-grade reading, 30 percent rated as proficient, down from 35 percent in 2003.”

Full story

FWIW at least that means that the majority of students can’t wrap their brains around how sad that is. A student was quoted as saying “who needs math irl lol”. Ok I made that up but you know it’s true.

Asshattery, ho!

So the UK is apparently putting in some sort of anti-cyberbully bill. I guess it’s no different from the normal treatment this topic gets from the powers that be. It’s fine to mess around with the little nerdy kid, making his life some flavor or another of living hell during gradeschool as long as it’s face to face. But mess with Buffy the pretty white girl’s myspace page anonymously and you’re going to pay. So it’s little nerdy kids taking out their frustrations via the internet and all the sudden there need to be bills put in place. Cute. Way to extend the status quo into the internet. Sucks for them I suppose that it’ll never actually work.

In any given modern society, the expectation of personal wellbeing and some mote of respect from peers is granted as a right. Or something like that. It’s typically expected that humans will act like decent humans towards other humans in “real life”. you have no such right or expectation on the internet. “Grow some thick skin” is not an acceptable response to some poor kid getting bullied at school since they have no choice but to go and face the same people every day. But it’s perfectly reasonable to tell some little twit whining about cyberbullying to grow some thick skin since they’re on the internet by choice only.

I mean like _really_ stupid

September 21st, 2007 4 comments

Stupid people are funny. Nay, hilarious. I know that makes me shallow or elitist or something, but I guess I’m ok with that. Matt (the roommate, for newcomers) and I started watching the new season of Beauty and the Geek. Normally I avoid TV. Normally I avoid reality TV even more. This is something different though, it’s a thing of beauty. They get a dozen or so of the most socially inept geeks and put them in a house with a dozen or so “really hot” girls. Then they toss in one of those elimination/survival games and shake up the house.

I enjoy the show for two reasons. First being that I used to be one of those socially inept geeks. So I can respect where these guys are coming from. Of course I hit a certain age and got a hold of a certain amount of mojo, and it seems like these guys just never got that. One of them is even a real live LARPer. Not even kidding. The only thing scarier than a furry. The second reason I watch the show is for the priceless shit that comes out of the mouths of the girls. I mean, you just don’t hear stuff like this. The question was asked “which is closer, the moon or the sun?”. One answered “The sun, it looks bigger”. Two just answered “The sun” with a little nod. Two more answered “Same distance”. I mean, how can you get out of grade school and not know the moon is closer? It’s just so unbelievable, the shit they say, I can’t help but watch.

Matt and I watched the last season and liked it. Being 2 socially well adjusted nerds, we get a kick out of both sides. Looking forward to this season. I reccommend watching it. Ignore the “elimination game” part of it, and just watch the contestants interact with people from their own group and the other groups.

Albert Einstein: “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.”

Found this while stumbling.

This displays exactly what goes on in my head when I see that commercial. Every time. Source unknown, I found it on the internets.

it’s not lupus

So I have the plague. Maybe it’s SARS, but it feels more like the plague. It keeps changing what it feels like doing to me. The one constant thing is this terrible sore throat. It’s some flavor of agony like a 6-7 on the pain scale between 1, “papercut” and 10, “evisceration”.

Oddly enough, this is the first time any pill-form painkiller has ever done me any good. Usually I’ll pop some aspirin or advil when something hurts, but it usually does little more than reduce a sharp stabbing pain to a less-sharp stabbing pain. I was making awful faces and convulsing my back muscles every time I swallowed though, so I though a fistful of aspirin (a “fistfull” is an imperial measurement equating to 6 pills at 325 mg) couldn’t do any harm. much to my surprise not only did it not do any harm, it actually helped. I’d forgotten I had even taken any pills, when half an hour later the pain started fading from sharp to dull to almost gone. it was actually quite amazing since I’d tried throat spray and like 3 different kind of “numbs your mouth silly” cough drops to no avail. Score 1 for aspirin.

At least it’s not a whale…

The “what the fuck?” award of the week goes to the state of Texas for the Geostationary Banana Over Texas project. No, seriously.. what the fuck. The banana is not some sort of odd shaped weather balloon. It’s not some kind of satellite dressed up like a banana for some reason. Or any other practical device in a humorous wrapper. It’s just a big banana. That will float over Texas.

Everyone I’ve shown this to thought it was cute. Or at least weird. So I thought I’d share it with the internets.

No need for blinker fluid

September 6th, 2007 No comments

On the way home, I saw someone actually using hand signals in their car instead of their blinkers. At first I thought “what a goon! Fix your lights, scrub!” Then I thought how few people even bother with their regular turn signals, and how this guy is guy is going so far as to stick his arm out the window every time he even changes lanes. That’s a lot more effort than most drivers bother to pur forward. Props to you, hand-signal-guy. props to you.
