Fluffers = hax0rs

May 25th, 2006 6 comments

Speaking of security, I saw these entries in my authentication log yesterday and was amused:

May 24 12:04:00 majordomo sshd[3846]: Invalid user fluffy from 210.121.206.210
May 24 12:04:03 majordomo sshd[3848]: Invalid user admin from 210.121.206.210

I was pleased since it stopped after the 2 attempts, so the new rule I wrote to stop those annoying SSH bots worked. Normally these SSH bots try a couple hundred usernames, probing for an easy match.

The thing that got me as funny was that it tried the username “fluffy before “admin”. I would hope “admin” would generate more hits as a real username than “fluffy”, but apparantly whoever set up this script thinks differently. Then again, I haven’t scanned the internet at large for common usernames =P

I just threw a wireless card in my firewall, Pipboy (named after Pipboy 2000 from the Fallout video game. They appear about the same level of technology). Geekness behind the cut.

I bought a laser pointer for $4 at a gas station. this is quite possibly the most fun per dollar I’ve ever had. Even compared to free stuff that’s fun. I got it specifically so I could use it to play with Dezzy. She flipped out when I first shined it on the floor. No following it with her head or stalking it out of curiosity. She instantly burst into action, furiously trying to get it. Running around at full speed, and jumping up walls… anything to catch it. She figured out pretty quickly that I was the source of this mysterious anomaly on the floor, but she still chases after it like her life depends on it. It’s the funniest thing ever. Matt loves making her run around too.

She’s a smart one though. She not only knows it’s us making the dot, she knows what we use to do it. If I pick up the pointer, she comes running over all purring and making the same strange kitty-sqwaks she makes when she sees a bug flying around out of reach. if I don’t start playing with it, she meows and whines. One time I picked it up just to move it, and when I didn’t use it at all. She marched away and made the most aggrivated whining sound I’ve ever heard her make. the cat equivalent of “wtf, you fucking tease”.

Seriously, this is the best thing evar.

EDIT – Adding math to this for Kz: similarly as 5+gold=perfect, cat+laser=rofl

SADFACE:

-I’m still at work. 6:30p now, my shift ended at 3:00. =(

GLADFACE:

-There’s 6 cases of free beer at work, and maybe 7 people around to drink it. =)
-Among the beer is Harpoon IPA. Although not stellar, it’s not bad at all. =)
-I’m getting paid overtime. =D

You do the math.

UPDATE – 4 hours and 7 beers after my shift ends, I’m leaving. and I was told to chalk up 8 hours of overtime. I can take no issue with this. I’m drive.

EDIT – 8

I like DJ Tiesto for the same reason I like the movie Aliens. Pure entertainment value with no thought provoked or required. Of course there are “better” DJs out there and better “trickier” material to listen to. Sometimes I just want to plug into some random candy trance. A guilty pleasure, perhaps. The same way I don’t want every conversation I have with friends to be some deep philosophical or technical discussion. There are no tricky transitions, no hidden breaks or weird timescales. It’s just wanton trance, and I’m ok with that.

Happy cinco de mayo! It was this day 46 years ago that the mighty soldiers of the city-state Cinco invaded the province of Mayo, bravely slaughtering every barbaric woman and child they could find. Men were raped and forced into underwater basketweaving camps to make the amazingly intricate wicker toilet seats the gentle people of Cinco were famous for.

Oddly, the background on this holiday has become largely forgotten. Most people you talk to have no idea what the hell Cinco de Mayo is, and have reduced it to an arbitrary excuse to buy a lot of alcohol and get drunk. This makes Cinco de Mayo differ very little from any given saturday night, sunday night, or weekday night.

Fiesta loco!!~~~ (Tildes added for authentic fiesta flavor)

May 4th, 2006 3 comments

This morning at the caf instead of just regular eggs or scrambled eggs, they put diced onions and peppers on it. For Cinco de Mayo. Because, like, the onions and peppers make it all fiesta-like. Because that’s what “they” do. They put onions and peppers on shit. That’s how you know it’s authentic fiesta style. You’re not having a fiesta until you’re fucking covered in onions and peppers. Seriously though, it’s not about the ingredients, it’s about the love. It’s the most genuine love you can buy for $2.73, dump in a styrofoam box, and take back to your desk.

A couple things

First, I got my most recent traffic ticket dismissed. ref this post about the ticket. yeah, was a little heavy. They dismissed the charges for “$100 court costs”. If you’ve been following this LJ for a while you’ll know this is the second time I’ve been caught on a suspended license. and this time there was a speeding charge associated. And they just tossed it out. They didn’t even ask for my side of the story. Just walked up to me, took one look, and said, “come here and sign this, we’re dismissing the case”. It may have helped that I was in a shirt/tie/sport coat (and pants, against my will), and everyone else was in jeans and a t-shirt. How anyone can stand in front of a judge with their pants around their knees and their boxers all hanging out is beyond me. Basically it seems the DA was under the impression that I was a “real person” and didn’t belong amongst these miscreants. Seriously, you just have to dress with a little respect. It’s not like the judge comes in wearing fucking sweats and a beater. Oh, I was 2 hours late to court too. There was a power outage and my alarm didn’t go off. but they wouldn’t know that, because they didn’t ask about that either.

Second, Postfix can die in a fire. EDIT: I got it working, it no longer needs to die in a fire.

Third, I love the internet
