Equal opportunity racism

My boss was telling me about an interesting incident with HR a while back

HR: “There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of African Americans working here”
Joe: “Sure there are. Those 3 over there are all from South Africa” *
HR: “That’s not what I mean, I mean like-”
Joe: “Ooooh, you mean black people
HR: “No no, I don’t mean that… You know, African Americans”
Joe: “Yeah, those guys are from Africa and they are living in America. I don’t see how they don’t count as African American”.
HR: “But they’re-”
Joe: “-white? I see. So you think we need more black people then?”
HR: “NO! I’m talking about Afric… … Nevermind, I don’t think I can talk about this anymore right now.”

Although Joe’s default mode is “antagonize”, I think he was making a valid point. If you insist on referring to a group of people as “African Americans” and using that as more or less the only qualifier for politidcal correctness reasons, be prepared to include everyone who is “African American”. Even if their skintone is white. After all, you’re attempting to be all happy-stars-and-rainbows politically correct and “colorblind”.

*For those not familiar, it’s typical for people from South Africa to be Caucasian in skintone with British sounding accents.

Send your senators an internet

I don’t normally do publilc service announcement type stuff, but when people mess with my precious internets I’m typically not silent about it. Yesterday a great many internet radio stations observed a day of silence protesting protesting the bump in music royalty rates for internet radio. from the article, “U.S. Copyright Royalty Board last March that raises royalty payments by 300 to 1,200 per cent, retroactive to June 2006.” If this holds, many stations will go bankrupt. Internet radio is one of those online gems I personally don’t want to see go away. I’ve barked up all the proper trees, and I strongly suggest you do too. Even if you don’t listen to internet radio, it’s supporting “the little guy” online. Or at least to stick it to the RIAA and associated assholes. Most of these stations are free and have no ads in the music streams, so they don’t have a whole lot of income aside from donations. So this kind of monetary hit isn’t something they can handle.

PS – Updated post, had unclear info.

I swear I must have pissed off someone at the RMV. Someone in there is clearly having a very big laugh at my expense. At this point, I’m positive that I am their favorite hobby. Hey Adam, how’s the weather in Poland?

I’m informed I’m a year older today. I’m currently disputing the charges and hoping to get it reversed.

For those of you who find the nerdy crap I post here interesting, you can check out the stuff I’m working on and the crappy little pages I’ve made and am making at (listed as my homepage link here). The main page is boring and ugly, that’s not what I’m working on currently. All the links there with descriptions are what I’m in the middle of and are marginally more interesting. I’ll just throw that out here so I can keep my nerd-spew to a minumum here, because I’m sure the majority of would rather not be bombarded by it. Feel free to email/IM me with questions/comments/wisecracks if you are by some strange coincidence working on, or interested in, something similar.

Black magic

If anyone out there in internets-land knows how to set up SNMP (pref on BSD but it doesn’t matter. I can adapt), let me know. SNMP is pretty strong voodoo and I’d like to get to know it better. Mostly for my own purposes, but we use it at work too. I’m going at it typical trial-by-fire style as typical for me… But a few pointers make it much faster. So yeah, if you have any mote of SNMP knowledge, lemme know.

UPDATE: Ok, apparently my mojo is stronger than I though. Success behind the cut.

Devil’s children

I’ve decided I’m left-handed. My left hand is the dominant one on the keyboard, and tends to be more dexterous. Being right-handed is usually defined by which hand one writes with as far as I can tell, and it’s a very rare occasion that I physically hold a pen to a piece of paper. And seriously… if you saw my handwriting, you’d know how little my right hand holds over my left in that respect. If handedness is determined by some other criteria, please call me a dumb-dumb-head let me know.

So since my left hand is dominant during the majority of the time spent working with my hands, I’ve gone ahead and decided I’m left-handed.

On the menu at work-

Breakfast Special:
Smoked salmon omelet with herbed cream cheese and toast

What the FUCK? Don’t get me wrong, I like smoked salmon… but in an omelet? They must have run out of repulsive meal ideas and had to open up “the forbidden chapter” in their cookbooks.
