So Dan0 and I went to see The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie tonight. We were totally “those guys” that brought towels and everything. We went into it not expecting much and really were just along for the ride. Opinions on the flick are behind the cut. You all know the story anyways (or at least I hope you do) so there really can’t be any spoilers… well, for that and one other reason… but you should probably read this after you’ve gone to see the movie anyways.

Got back from the trip down to FL a couple days ago. As always, the visit seemed too short. It usually seems too short, but this time it seems more so than usual. It was a good time. Went to my first indie bar ever for Reesey’s 21st birthday. Even though it’s not my chosen flavor of music, I dig it and deff have to DL.. er… buy more of it. I found myself saying “huh, this is pretty catchy” quite a bit. It surprises me that people can find a way to bump and grind to Interpol, though =P. Went down to Boca for the second half of the trip and chilled down there. It was a good break, and it kinda sucks to be back. It usually sucks to be back, but this time it seems more so than usual.

Not much more to update. got the summer tires on the SVX and it drives like a whole new car. so very much less slop than with the snow tires. What instability I had ascribed to the struts seems to have been due to the tires. it points so well now.

Also, I just really delved into my http-access log for the first time. I was surprised how much I’m getting attacked by worms. luckily only windows machines are vulnerable to the worm that’s attacking me, but it’s coming from a surprising number of machines. and they’re on the same network I am (the 24. network, which is huge). for everyone’s benefit, I’m listing my entire blacklist file, including the hosts which are infected with the worm and have tried to attack me behind the cut. if you have a firewall, I suggest you block these IP addresses. I get numerous hits on many of these IPs every day. the networks I have blocked are mostly china or germany, and I get tons of hits from them. I don’t know anyone from those places, so I assume they have no business contacting me. I haven’t had a complaint yet.

This page is simply too awesome to not link. Credit to danowar:

some random ones:

“Vin Diesel is the cause of gravity. He picked 9.8 m/s for the gravitational constant because he deemed it to be “a fucking awesome number.” And that was that.”

“Vin Diesel can divide by zero.”

“Until Taxes came along, Death and Vin Diesel were the only constants in life.”

“A black cat crossing your path brings bad luck. Vin Diesel brings certain death.”

just keep hitting F5. there are some really funny ones.

On the list of things I’m not very happy about at the moment is taxes. I don’t mean this in the common “I, like, hate taxes… because they suck,” flavor of of disliking taxes. Most people whine and moan about what a pain doing taxes are, then walk away with a fat check to show for their bitching. I, however, whine and moan about what a pain it is to do taxes and walk away with an $800.00 bill. When i filled out the withholding information for Sonoscan, I filed as married (since I was at the time… this being some time ago). This put me in a different tax bracket than a single person, and less was withheld. When I got divorced, one of the items on the checklist of “Things one should do but is not coached or informed about upon getting divorced” is filling out new tax information at work. So… not enough was being withheld from my checks, and now I get to stomach an $800.00 debt to the IRS instead of chewing on a nice fat federal return. Sure I got back $100.00 from the state, but that’s like someone washing your car after it’s been totalled… It doesn’t make me much happier about the situation.

How did I get by before I started taking little vacations every month? Seriously… the time away and “brain resetting” is very helpful. Going away again this Wed thorugh Sun.

Third shift is starting to sink in. i don;t get tired till at least 4am anymore, and I generally get up at 2 or 3pm. It’s not hard to get up earlier though. In fact, getting up at all isn;t really a problem anymore. I go to sleep immediately after I get home from work as opposed to the tried and (rumored to be) true method of getting up and going to work shortly thereafter. So when I get up it’s several hours till I have to be at work (10:30-ish). Reesey came by back in march and it wasn;t too difficult to live on a marginally more typical time schedule. I guess I’m still young and malliable… which is funny, seeing as I’m ancient. Why do I feel this is post-worhty? 4:00am leaves little recourse for social interaction.

I saw the better part of the trunkmonkey crew today. Very cool to see all you guys again. My absences are far too many. hopefully with the warmer weather we’ll be able to chill more on weekends turning wrenches and whatnot… being very careful not to cross-thread sparkplugs (or blow motors).

Now I shall try to sleep (4am is early) so I can get up and do taxes/bills tomorrow. wheeeee.

PS – Ding! 57.

Bah. stupid body. I can’t sleep. and I’m in a bad mood. perhaps it’s that I can’t sleep that has me in a bad mood, but I think it’s the other way around. It’s not so much that I got up on the wrong side of the bed… I’m just ON the wrong side of the bed at the moment.

In other news, I went to Prity’s place today again to take care of the cats while she and Ed are out. Liam is still the same (if a little fatter). He’s always “spoken” almost conversationally. He’ll mimic the number of syllables and tone that you give him as if to say “I know you’re talking to me, and I’m trying to respond in a way that doesn;t sound like random meowing”. He’s the cat on which I coined the term “mow mow” that I use to describe any given cat. if you say “mow mow, baby” to him, he says “mow mow!” right back. It’s the cutest thing.

In ancillary news, I’m getting to know the ropes at work pretty well. I’m even starting to get the hang of Cisco IOS (router-speak land happy fun-time 100%). I need to get my CCNA the more I stay in the IT field the more I don’t miss having not gone to grad school. I actually enjoy this stuff. It may not be what I envisioned myself doing when I was in college, but I think I knew that computers could well be “my thing” if I put myself to it. the 4 years were hardly wasted in that I cherish the knowledge I gained… but I have no feelings of regret about abandoning what was “my field” for something more promising (financially and in terms of job satisfaction).

anyways… now that I’ve droned on enough with my twilight ramblings, I’ll try to get some more sleep and hopefully wake up on a more pleasant side of the bed.
