Oh noes! people making fun of you on the internets! serious business for sure.

People who are incapable of feeling the waters before diving in should not expect help getting out of the water. I’m a moderator on a very large message board, and our “off topic” forum sees a ton of traffic. we get people coming from all over trying to jump in and become “one of the crowd” without first seeing what the crowd is like. It’s like going to a bar and expecting to be cool with the regulars on the first visit. It’s a culture you’re trying to dive into, and if your first posts come off like you think you are “all that” and should be treated as such… things will NOT go well. a lot of forum dwellers make it a game to see how mean they can be without actually breaking forum rules. It’s the internet. It’s not a friendly place. Take a few days to get to know the people you’re trying to mesh with before opening your mouth.

God forbid you ever make it to IRC…

Dealing with AT&T as a telco makes me want to stab people/objects/??(anything at all)??. After pushing random buttons to select random options in an attempt to be forced to a real human, the person I finally got transfered me to a fax machine. Now I’m talking to someone who might be the right person, and this is after being given 4 different numbers to call and being hung up on once. not including the fax machine.

Nobody is worse than AT&T at generating tickets and following up on them. Nobody.

So my server has been rebooting recently for seemingly no reason. I thought I had it nailed down to a collection of corrupt files, but I’m not so sure anymore. In the time being I wanted to monitor when the box goes down, so I conjured up an idea for a simple looping script to send me a notification when my box goes down. I’ve become pretty handy with scripting but never had a reason to use a loop. now I do. And this will leave me an email record of every time the box went down.

This is pretty much how I learn everything. I “know that it exists” but can’t quite commit it to memory just by pining over it. it’s not till I have an actual application for it that I can learn it. I try to implement it and fail several times, and in that process I learn “how shit’s done, s0n.” Code behind the cut if you’re interested.

I’m think I heard somewhere that Turner Broadcasting will have to pay something like $500k for this whole aquateen thing. looks like their ad campaign worked. how much do you suppose it would cost to get ads running continuously all day on CNN, as well as every major news channel in MA/new england? yeah.

I remembered this as well, and posted in ‘s LJ… it’s not as if this sort of thing is without precedent either. “LED tagging/graffiti” has been around for a while.
