I found out what the funny noise in my car is. I was getting a whirring/grinding that I had associated with the transmission. it didn’t seem to effect the drivability of the car in any way. it was just annoying.

it’d come on all the sudden at around 3000 RPMs-ish. I only could really hear it in 1st and 2nd. today I noticed that I could hear a little grinding at idle. after playing with blipping the throttle and letting the clutch in and out, I think it’s the input shaft bearing(s). I figured I’d have to replace the entire tranny, but I guess replacing the bearing is not prohibitively expensive or difficult.

so basically I get to take my tranny apart. yay. thankfully, this problem can be driven on for a very good amount of time before failure. so it’s nothing to panic about. dismantling a tranny is something I haven’t done yet. This time I won’t break any bolts in places I can’t reach them (reference). I’m not too worried about this. I’ve been driving on it for 6000-ish miles and it hasn’t gotten any worse, and it’ll probably be another several months before I need to worry about fixing it. no big thing.

EDIT: pics of what I’ll be doing: linky. Holy crap that looks daunting. but whatever… I’ve never turned away from a job before just because it’s daunting. metal is metal. I’ll get the job done.
