Saw the weirdest thing on the road today…

My brother and I were driving to Amherst to drop him off which means driving through some “less established corners of civilization”. So we’re beboppin down route 202. it’s a small windy highway that passes through several of these little towns in the sticks. There was a plank of plywood leaning up against a sign that was saying “this way to Pelham” or something. The plank of plywood had “GRAVES” spraypainted on it in flourescent orange. My brother and I exchanged stares and both agreed it was one of the most random and creepy things we’d seen in a while. Most places have a nice sign saying “Town Cemetary” or something on it.

One time I was driving on Deal Island, MD. This is a marshy, wetlands, underdeveloped, creepy outback part of Maryland’s lower eastern shore. As we’re driving along, we notice all of these giant six foot slabs of concrete lying on the ground, in an orderly, rectangle pattern. In front of them are tombstones. This was a cemetery, and we later came to find out that the purpose of the slabs was to keep the bodies from shooting out of the ground during floods. Apparently this is quite common in places like Louisiana.

I can see how it might be daunting to see granny floating by on a damp sunday morning. but hey, if people start popping out of the ground down there, apparently there’s plenty of room in Pelham for them.
