Hellboy 2

Saw hellboy 2 last night. I dont normally comment on movies, but this one was a lot of fun. I expected it to just be a cheesy action flick, but it was much more pleasing. Guillermo Del Toro did an amazing job with the directing and monsters as he always does, better than normal on the creatures in my opinion. The plot and acting was less cheesy than the first Hellboy (which I did like, was just a little less developed), and the characters were more human. It gets my action flick seal of approval.

My girlfriend commented that Hellboy was in some sense a really well-done bit of fan-fic. Del Toro took the fairly static comic book characters and gave them personal relationships and looked to see what happened.

Also, the villain is totally someone’s Vampire PC.

I thought it was a bit silly and Harry Potterish overall, but enjoyed it. Hated the opening 10 minutes. Loved the drunken beer musings. Didn’t really like the troll market, but liked the trolls…and the tooth fairies.

The Death Angel was fantastic and a much needed bit of gravitas in an otherwise “ooh. the evil sewer elves are after us with shiny metal go-bots!” I mean, they were *cool* sewer elves, but the whole back story didn’t work for me.
