Ok, it’s pretty much settled. I’m a wicked f’n geek. I’ve known this for a while, but a couple of things happened yesterday that made me think, “wow… I’m not just your average run-of-the-mill geek”. I put my ramblings behind the cut, since any non-geek will find the stories utterly unintersting.

1) Last night was poker night. I was sitting at the table with 6 other guys, most of which were IT guys. We’d been at it for a while, and my brain was in that sort of idle mode that allows for playing Texas Hold’Em and making witty comments without having to do much actual thinking. One of the guys said “Frank still has to post”, referring to him being “big blind” and having to ante up. I thought to myself “power on self test? huh?” and I actually searched in my head for a reason they were saying a person had to POST. in my defense, I just finished installing a new motherboard, and I’ve been playing with overclocking… And in my research I’ve seen a lot of threads where people talk about “my rig wouldn’t POST”. so the terminology is more in my head than usual. still…

2) I was in IRC chatting with the NESIC guys earlier yesterday. I asked a question about RAID arrays. They’re all ubergeeks so it’s not at all an odd question. I told them I had both my IDE channels full with 3 CD/DVD drives, and one hard drive. I have 2 additional RAID channels and only one drive in one of them. I wanted to add more and I was wondering if I could make a RAID-0 array with dissimilar drives (I have one 30GB and one 15GB) or if I’d have to go with a JBOD array. when I was done describing what I wanted to do, one of the guys said “what do you do for a job again? becuase you displayed more computer knowledge in the last few lines of IRC text than the last 6 applicants for the consulting position at my company.” …which is sad since I’ve never taken any computer courses, and technically my field is physics (even though I did work the IT industry for a couple years… with no qualifications or workplace experience :p). so that also made me think, “roffleomgwtf, I’m a little more geeky than I thought.”

yeah, that’s some powerful shit. that’s all I got for now.

Imagine how geeky you’d be if you founded a ROLEPLAYING GAME.

    Oh wait, that’s me.

fwiw, you should be able to build a concat using unlike drives, for mirroring you’d only be able to mirror the size of the smallest drive. OF course, this is all veritas / disksuite, which I doubt your box has…
so, it will depend on what your raid card will support, since it’s hardware raid afterall.
