Today I read an article stating that some scientists believed they had observed the neutrinoless double-beta decay in an interaction. This would be a major discovery since the Standard Model prohibits this through conservation of lepton nuumber. This was shocking to me for a few reasons:

1) I am going to the AIP webpage to search for physics news updates even though I have them automatically emailed to me on a schedule, and I am hunting for sed news before it gets emailed to me.

2) Not only do I know what conservation of lepton number is, but I care that it might have been violated.

3) In my personal list of values, this bothers me more than the war we’re currently at.
